Reflections from the Rector

The death of Osama bin Laden has brought with it much emotion, confusion, and reflection among people of faith. Many have expressed relief, hope and joy. At the same time there also been sadness and concern.

A member of St. David’s who is 19-years-old shared this perspective: “911 was the first time that the world broke into my consciousness. For the majority of my life I have lived under the shadow of fear and evil associated with the events of that day, Osama bin Laden being the figure primarily associated with those events. The news of his death brought with it the hope that that shadow might be lifted. I found myself dancing in the streets with 3,000 other students caught up in this hope.”

He also expressed conflict and concern about dancing with joy at the death of another human being and how that corresponds with being a person of faith. I believe his thoughts and feelings reflect those of many.

While the death of this man may bring relief that the shadow of violence may begin to lift, there has been deep concern expressed by many over the nature and vehemence of the public response to his death. Continue reading >
